Open Question: Dogs in general/seperation anxiety issues?
Do you think Bull is cute? http://flickr.com/photos/26593866@N08/ Tips on how to deal with his seperation anxiety besides box training and a canine companion? What do you like (looks wise) in a dog? Temperament wise? I like short coated dogs. I don't like putting too much time in to grooming. I'd rather be walking or playing with him/her. I also tend to like muscular type dogs with uncropped ears. Temperament wise I like friendly dogs that thrive on human interaction. Intelligence is always a plus for me. I also tend to like medium-high energy dogs. Dogs that like to cuddle are my favorites! My favorites are pitties (Bull is a pit mix) and German Shepherd Dogs (Otis).

Voting Question: Pet Nail Filer?
I have 3 dogs and 1 Guinea pig, And i saw a pet nail filer on TV and looked it up on Amazon.com, And i was just wondering if this nail file would work for a guinea pig? I havent been able to trim my guinea pig's nails yet, and she's 6 months old now, and i cant even pick her up because she scratches me and now it breaks the skin. But im soo afraid to trim her nails to old fashion way, because the last time i tried that she squeeled and it sounded like a pained squeel. So i just want to know if that is possible? This is the Nail file i was looking at but if there is a better one that will actually work for guinea pigs please tell me what it is if this one doesnt work: http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-761-03-Cordless-Grooming-Rotary/dp/B0000C6DZ2/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1210290722&sr=8-1

Resolved Question: What's wrong with the dog living in the yard?
Background: I asked a question earlier about owning a dog for the first time, and it evolved in users sort of bashing me for considering keeping the dog outside. QUESTION: What exactly is the issue of keeping the dog outside? How would that turn into a problem for the dog's development? home rule: there is no way he can live inside, unless extreme climate issues demand it. Please read on >>>>> More Info: I possess a big walled yard, with 2 big roofed areas, trees, a wooden forte and I would buy a Doggy home (pretty good shade options). He would have access to an "endless" water and food bowls. We live in a humid tropical weather. Socialization and exercise would arrive at a daily basis; grooming and other maintenance would be done regularly. Sure, I'll be off at school and at work for portions of the day, but I have brothers and sisters who would keep an eye on him while I'm gone. I'd say he's got everything going for him. Note: I'm considering an English Bull Terrier as a pet

Open Question: What dog breed suits me best?
I am getting a dog soon but I just don't know which nice... I would quite like a pointer preferably a Portuguese or English. I have had some experience with pointers as my Granny has one and we look after him quite a lot (about 8 or more weeks a year) and my auntie has one and I visit it a lot. The dog would be in the home itself from about 8:30 until about 1:05. It would receive taken out in the morning, half 1ish and later in the day and long walks on weekends and possibly some weekdays. It would need to be child friendly. We don't have any other pets. We would like one ha doesn't need groomed o much and doesn't shed a lot. Could anyone please tell what dog would suit me and my family best? Thankyou. I also like weimaraners, labradors, golden retrievers and pointer/labrador cross. I would prefer a boy and I don't want a tiny dog. But it's what you every think, I'm no expert.

Resolved Question: Westie life expectancy?
I've always heard that West Highland Terriers are long lived dogs but someone who grooms dogs told me they only live to be about 10 years old. Is this true? Also that they often suffer from chronic ear infections which was news to me. I have a 5 year old Westie, he is very healthy and always as been. He eats a good quality dog food and has regular vet visits. In your experience how long does a westie live, especially if you've owned one I would like to know. Also: How about German Shepherds? I thought about 10-12 years but I've also heard they are long-lived. As old as 14 when they die. Your experience or thoughts on this? Our last dog, a mixed breed, died a few months shy of 8 due to health problems associated with severe hip dysplasia. Hardest thing in the world to go through.

Resolved Question: how can i tell if my dog is a purebred mini poodle?!?
i posted this question before people saying he wasnt. because of his snout. but i trimmed the hair by his cnout and his snout is actually long and pointy. it was just covered my fur. he has the "hair in the ears" that you have to tug out, extreemly curly hair (tight poodle curls) has tht high pitched poodle bark, tiny dainty feet, fine wealthy fur on his ears. and he is a apricot color (a rusty white). could he be a purebred mini poodle? he weighs about 13-15lbs, and a little shorter than a cocker spaniel. he has papers but there ACA papers. i cant go too the vet right now to receive him tested. because i dont have the extra money right now. ( i do have enough to pay for his food, grooming etc so) do u guys need a pic to help? or can u tell? thankssssss http://webzoom.freewebs.com/fyffe1234/BENJI.jpg ^ that is not him but this dog looks XACTLY like my dog. but mine has a little more fur than him ( we didnt shave him yet) i know poodles are sposed to be intelligent dogs who do tricks but mine is very stubborn, tho he does adore to swim like a poodle and can jump VERY high. i do adore him and i don't care if he's purebred or not ( i have a mysterey cocker spaniel mix with westie schnauzer god knows what else andi adore her also) i was just curious. we also emailed the pet store ( no we didnt buy him from one we adopted him from someone who bought him from a pet store) and they said he was a purebred... soo =]

Voting Question: How to get rid of ticks I can't see?
We have found 3 ticks on our dog. When we found the first one a couple of days ago, we put frontline on her, but tonight we found a tiny one and one that was engorged. We are getting her groomed this weekend so that they will be easier to find and re-applying the frontline. Will a flea and tick shampoo kill any that are on her that we can't look? What can we do to make sure we got them every. Last summer, the flea pressure was due to the weather. When Sassy ended up with fleas, less than a month after we had applied frontline, the vet said it was fine to re-apply before the 30 days was up. She is really furry right now and I am worried about the amount of frontline that actually made it to her skin. Last summer, the flea pressure was due to the weather. Resolved Question: Juvenile coat?
Does anyone know if Bichon Frise have a "juvenile" coat? At what age do they receive their "proper" adult coat? I ask because last night when out walking I saw someone with a soft coated wheaten terrier. I was talking to her about "maintenance" and grooming / combing the shaggy coat. She said her dog was now aged 7 and she only needed to comb her 2-3 times a week now... BUT when the dog was young she had to do it every day because other wise is became so tangled and knotted. She said the dog had a "puppy" coat until she reached age two. I have a one year old Bichon and wondered if they "change" coats when they receive older? I know they don't reach maturity until they are aged two. Does their coat change at every?

Open Question: A couple of dog breed questions...?
First, how can I convince my mom that tiny dogs aren't bad? She doesn't like smaller dog breeds, like Dachshunds or Chihuahuas - even Cocker Spaniels are almost too tiny. She thinks they are 'yippy little ankle biters'. I personally like tiny dog breeds, but she doesn't. Does anybody have any good arguments I can use to convince her that tiny dogs are good dogs too? She doesn't think they are 'proper' dogs. Also, how much grooming do Spitz breeds need? I was just wondering. I am fond of Japanese Spitz dogs, and German Spitz, etc. and I am getting a dog next year, but I'm not sure I could keep up with the grooming needs of a Spitz. How many times on an average week do they need brushing, and for how long? Any personal experience with it? And, just because I can - what is your favourite dog breed, and why? Mine is - well, look at my name. = )

Open Question: another yorkie question?
im confused, about the types of yorkies, is their only one nice of yorkshire terrier, or is their different types, for example, teacup yorkies is this a breed or the way they are bred, is a silky yorkie a different breed type or is it every in the way the dog is groomed, such as i have a typical looking yorkie, but he doesnt have the long flowing hair that i have seen in some yorkies, i know this seems like a dumb question, but i just would like to know, my pal has just gotten a yorkie, and he is the same age as my yorkie but hers is very tiny, mine looks like a monster next to hers and mine only weighs 7lbs, also my dogs hair is a curlier, and hers is like very fine, with no curls, she got hers from a pal for free i guess she didnt ask questions, , so she is not sure if it is going to have long flowing hair, anyway i was just wondering about this.

Resolved Question: Norwegian Elkhound Grooming?
So, my boyfriend and I currently reside with his parents, and they've recently adopted a beautiful Norwegian Elkhound. She was rescued from a puppy mill in Lancaster, PA (it has the most puppy mills per capita in the nation, sadly). She's a great dog, the fur is just driving EVERYONE nuts. I literally spent 2 hours brushing her today, split into two because she gets frustrated with the brushing. She just started her moult, and this is the first one we've had her for. How do you deal? Any tips or tricks to handling their fur? Its seriously like a sheep dropping bits of fur every over the home. You touch her and clumps arrive out, she shakes and CLUMPS fly. The second I receive every the loose fur, she just randomly had more loose fur. Any personal experience with this breed would be great, we have half of a trashbag full of fur from brushing from the past 2 days alone. Thats not counting whats in the vacuum. =/ I do use a rake... but it goes about 5 inches before I have to cease and remove the fur. I also can brush that same section for 10 minutes and still not have every of her undercoat removed. They make sweaters out of this dogs undercoat in norway. Its just insane amounts of it.

Show dogs are groomed. Pet dogs beg for treats. Show dogs animate for bait. Pet dogs jump the fence. Obedience dogs demonstrate problem solving intelligence. Pet dogs bark at other dogs. Agility dogs show excitement before showing. Pet dogs are hyper. Show dogs are high-steer. Pet dogs steal socks and laundry. Show dogs show natural retrieving ability. Pet dogs find and chew up their owners' shoes. Obedience dogs are practicing scent articles.

Open Question: Miniature Schnauzer grooming?
My family is getting a black miniature schnauzer. My mom is not very glad about this, as it was nice of a surprise gift for my brother's birthday. She says schnauzers are so hideous and she wants a different nice of dog. I keep telling her that it depends on how you groom them(like clip off the beard), but I can hardly find any pictures of them with this type of grooming. Can anyone help me find any pictures of schnauzers with this clip? I'm not trying to be rude; the whole point of the question was to find better pictures. I personally don't like the beard either. I mean it's this http://www.furbabyrescue.com/gifs/DuketheSchnauzer.jpg vs. this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/Miniature_Schnauzer_puppy_blackandsilver.jpg/428px-Miniature_Schnauzer_puppy_blackandsilver.jpg The second one, in my opinion, is just DARLING compared to the first, no offense. Juliah, I like the one with the short beard/eyebrows better. I don't want NO beard/eyebrows, just shortened cause most of these pictures have like a beard that's like a foot long!

Resolved Question: How am I supposed to react?
I work now in the dogwash/grooming business. And, I tell you, I've seen more than I care to! How am I supposed to react when someon has the horribly human/dog aggressive rottie, and they're explaining how they want to breed this dog? WHAT? WHY? The toy poodle that is being bred to fund this man's retirement. The front feet point out at almost a 45 degree angle, and the eyes don't even look straight ahead! I'm not even sure what this dog sees? The lady with the 3 month old Shih Tzu/poodle she bought at a petstore that she can't WAIT until it's old enough to have puppies! The dogs that arrive in that are obviously neglected because the eye is matted close with feces? The dogs that are so hugely overweight that they have to sit with their legs WAY out to the side? How do I handle these people? If I start spouting off, I'll lose customers? Is there a "gentle" way to educate these people? HELP ME PLEASE! ADD: PJ I am the owner of the establishment- which makes it harder, I think, than if I just worked here! Hehehe. I could stand losing my job for something I believe strongly in- but losing my business- it's somehow different when the shoe is on the other foot!

Resolved Question: wedding party etiquette?
My boyfriend was asked to be a groomsman in his college roommate's upcoming wedding. Both the groom- and bride-to-be are extremely wealthy (with huge inheritances), yet they claim they're "needy" as he is still a graduate student and she's the only one working right now. They live in an expensive apartment, just bought an expensive "show" dog for thousands, and seem to wave their money, or lack thereof, around in everyone's faces. When my boyfriend was told that the wedding would be in LA (a 5-hour steer), he was also told that he could pick one of two hotels to stay at. We were appalled when we found out that he had to pay for both his tuxedo and the hotel room, because we'd always believed that the wedding party at least had their accommodations paid for. Is it wrong to bring up the subject of having the couple pay for the hotel room and tux? My boyfriend is considering not giving a wedding gift, as him paying over $600 that weekend is enough to be a gift to the couple.

Open Question: What is a good price for grooming a small dog? I live in San Leandro, CA and have a 7-lb Maltipoo.?
She is almost 5 months and this will be her first grooming. We've been bathing her and clipping her nails ourselves, but she is in need of a trim, especially around the face and a good ear cleaning/plucking as she is scratching at her ears a lot. I would adore a recommendation or 2 as well. This is my first dog!

Resolved Question: Can i take my cat...?
Can i take my cat to receive her groomed (hair clip, nails clipped) like a dog? She has very long hair and i just noticed some mats in her hair on her legs, and we don't have air conditioning so i want to receive her hair clip so she doesn't receive so hot. Is it ok to have your cat groomed? Do places like pet smart have grooming for cats too? about how much would it cost?
